Abstract | Humans regularly interact with other humans for a variety of reasons. These interactions give rise to concepts like the family, friendships and acquaintances. Social networks formed from these interactions affect almost every human activity, and hence understanding their structure and dynamics is of paramount importance. The processes like wars, spreading of rumours and diseases, trades between the countries are just a few examples of such human activities. In spite of an intense study of social networks since last few decades by people from diverse fields, the problem of characterizing them has remained elusive. In this talk, I will introduce some basic ideas in this field and will try to explain where our ignorance lies. |
